CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Kadaj
Age: Chronologically, 2 weeks. Biologically, about 16.
Canon: Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Canon Point: After absorbing Jenova’s cells.
Character Information:
Personality: Kadaj is considered to have extraordinary will power backed by an intense cruelty. He usually gets whatever he wants. All his motives are for “Mother”, who is known more commonly as Jenova. Jenova’s sole purpose is to consume the entire planet. She had failed, and now depends on her first son, Sephiroth to complete that task.
However, Kadaj realizes that while Jenova and Sephiroth both seek to destroy the planet, they have different ideas on how it should be accomplished. Sephiroth wants to rule the planet for himself. Yet, Kadaj believes it should be ruled by Jenova. After all it was Jenova who gave Sephiroth her gifts. In Kadaj’s eyes this could possibly be seen as blasphemy against The Reunion (bringing Sephiroth back from the “dead” to complete the task).
Even so, as a remnant of Sephiroth, Kadaj feels constant pressure to be just like Mother’s first son, which has twisted into a severe inferiority complex. It is a daily and mentally exhausting battle that he must prove to Mother that he is worthy of her attention, and he until he does he will remain incomplete. His loyalty to her is so strong that despite being incredibly selfish, he’d gladly take his own life to make her happy.
Kadaj wants to be Mother’s favorite; he wants to be the one who serves her, who is totally loyal to her, who’ll go to the end of the world for her. But her favorite is Sephiroth, who Kadaj deems as undeserving. If it’s one thing he feels around Sephiroth, its extreme jealousy mixed with an odd sense of admiration for his position in Jenova’s eyes.
The envious nature against Sephiroth is a strong motivator for him to work harder and faster than ever--he must be better than Sephiroth to gain Mother’s approval. The down side is his ambition to outdo his rival often gets in the way of logical thinking, and he ends up acting out on raw emotional impulses.
Acting out and being impulsive is nothing new for Kadaj. Determination, stubbornness, and just pure will are key components that make up his personality. As with anything, there can be “too much of a good thing” and these strengths also translate into weaknesses. He is impulsive, explosive, and very impatient. It doesn’t matter who he is dealing with, these characteristics will always shine through--even while serving Mother and Sephiroth.
He gets bored easily and finds amusement in other's suffering; even more so if he's the one causing it. Being the youngest of the family, Kadaj has a tendency to act like a child, sometimes throwing brutal tantrums whenever he is in a bad mood. In addition, he prone to small bouts of instability that may cause poor judgment. The only person/thing he'll listen to his Mother, who is he believes has the utmost authority. Whatever she says goes. He will follow her without question and utmost dedication. Though he is still heavily influenced by Sephiroth, and he does (at least outwardly) respect Mother’s first when paths are crossed.
Internally, he loathes his position and actions. Kadaj takes this stance against anyone who has “bested” him. He creates excuses for any failures that may come his way to boost his own confidence. Kadaj treats his brothers as somewhat equals. They too, are Mother’s children, but he is the leader. His brothers will always adhere to his judgment and they are just as loyal to him as they are to Mother. Therefore, there is little conflict among the trio.
The only thing he truly fears is failure. While he prefers Mother over Sephiroth, he feels he cannot fail either of them. His sole purpose in life is to complete The Reunion. This is the only way to make Mother happy.
Additional Information regarding the Jenova/Sephiroth/Kadaj relationship:
Canonly, we know very little how Kadaj feels about Sephiroth. The writers purposefully left many unanswered questions in favor of personal interpretation. So, the following is what I believe!
The only thing we know for certain is that Kadaj holds a degree of jealousy towards Sephiroth. The one indication we get is when Kadaj is speaking with Rufus ShinRa after he finishes explaining Mother’s cause.
“I've never known Sephiroth. I just sense him there; it's unbearable to think Mother might want Sephiroth over me!”
This statement explains three very important factors in regard to Kadaj’s relationship with Sephiroth. Number one: He has never met him prior to The Reunion. Kadaj and Sephiroth have never crossed paths physically or telepathically. However, his presence is felt—it seems to be more of an innate pressure or drive being pushed upon Kadaj by Sephiroth.
Number two: Kadaj obviously feels some degree of threat from him that Mother may prefer Sephiroth over himself. With that we can assume he is not only envious of his position in Jenova’s eyes, but that there must be a trace of admiration. He must also feel insignificant when being compared to Sephiroth.
Kadaj is often in denial when it comes to his flaws and it showed when he finished his thought with, “It doesn't matter who she picks; you'll all meet the same end! Mother came to this Planet after a long journey to rid the cosmos from fools like you! “
Number three, and a very crucial note here, is that Kadaj believes Jenova and Sephiroth as completely separate entities. Mother is an entity which came from the cosmos to rule the planet and rid of humanity or anything she deemed worthless. Sephiroth is someone who was born on the planet and is simply one of Mother’s children (her favorite). He was bestowed with her gift to carry out her will.
Ultimately, Kadaj’s “love” for Mother goes so deeply that he is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for her own. While he may not feel the same pressure from Jenova as he feels from Sephiroth, he is adamant that she exists. He spoke to her briefly after he had poisoned the children with his will in The Forgotten Capital.
“See, Mother? All my new brothers and sisters! They can keep me company, just until I find you.”
Kadaj’s obsession with Mother is absolute. He realizes all too well that he was solely created for The Reunion, in which Sephiroth would return to fulfill Mother’s wishes.
But it isn’t quite so simple. He had thoroughly explained to Rufus what her intentions were for the planet.
The problem with this is that the plan doesn’t exactly mesh well with Sephiroth’s plan. Sephiroth wanted to rule the planet for himself, not for Mother.
“What I want, Cloud, is to sail the darkness of the cosmos with this Planet as my vessel -- just as my mother did long ago.”
Given all the details on personal thoughts, feelings, and behavior from Kadaj and Sephiroth we can begin to conclude some key differences in their mentality and views on each other.
Sephiroth saw Kadaj a mere puppet—a tool, a means to an end. He wants to rule the planet like Jenova did long ago. It is clear that Sephiroth does not believe Jenova still exists.
Kadaj, on the other hand, is not only a firm believer in her existence, but her right to inherit the planet. Not only does Kadaj feel that Sephiroth is an obstacle to overcome to gain Mother’s approval, he also views Sephiroth’s actions as borderline blasphemous for calling The Reunion for himself--not for Mother.
Loz, one of Kadaj’s brothers, at one point explains that all they (the remnants) needed to do was to find Mother, and then she would tell them what to do. Perhaps Kadaj was hoping for that to be the case, and that he could somehow prove his worthiness to her before The Reunion needed to take place.
The first time Kadaj was finally alone with Mother, he cried. He came to terms that either Mother is not as he had hoped (though his devotion for her will never waiver) and that Sephiroth was right; or that Mother simply will not tell him how to proceed and she had chosen Sephiroth over him.
He still held fast onto that hope, however, when questioned by Cloud on what he was planning to do next and Kadaj replied with, “Mother is going to tell me.”
When Kadaj lost the fight against Cloud he would rather have an early Reunion and bring Sephiroth back even if it means the end of himself. It still fulfills Mother’s wishes to a degree and at least the planet would not fall into the unworthy hands of humanity. Anything for Mother. Anything to make her happy.

In Kadaj’s wanderings he had found something. A flower garden.
He stopped just at the edge of the flower patch. Flowers were one of the Planet’s gifts to humans. Humans saw them as beautiful, hopeful objects. They even gave them to each other as gifts displaying gratitude or love. Kadaj couldn’t quite comprehend why an uprooted soon-to-be dead plant was all that significant, but he immediately decided he did not like them and what they represented.
“I’ll crush you,” he breathed through a clenched jaw. “Ruin you like others have ruined me.” Just as he was about to lift his foot a small beetle emerged from the garden and scurried its way closer. It went over the remnant’s leather boot, not around it, and stayed there. Kadaj glared down at the insignificant insect. It seemed the beetle rather enjoyed its new space. He tapped the toe of his boot on the ground and the beetle carelessly fell off, landing precariously on its back. He watched with amusement as it desperately swung from side to side in order to right itself. “It’s pointless to struggle.” Kadaj managed a small grin as he spoke to the beetle. “Just give up.”
The beetle righted itself once more, fixing its wings. The remnant displayed a bitter frown. The instinct defied him.
“What did I tell you?” He warned the bug. Kadaj took a single step towards the garden and with a satisfying crunch he crushed the disobedient beetle in its place.
